The history of Maps

In social studies today we learned that the first map was made by Eratosthenes about 200 years before Christ was born. The map was very inaccurate and put places like Libya huge and there was no New World or North and South America as we now call them. About 300 years later improvements were made to the world map by Ptolemy. It looked a little bit better but was still super inaccurate. Next we learned what contemperary mapping is. Contemperary mapping is a tool that was used by geographers to communicate complex geographical phenomonons. Finally we learned that it is nearly impossible to put the world on a flat square/rectangular map because or projection and distortion. The map will appear slightly off in size or shape no matter what you do to it.
