Tests back

I really don't want to talk about the test. I did bad and most people did better than i did so i don't want to say muchh in this blog. I just am trying to stay positive knowing that I still have a B. I want to stay in honors next year so I'm trying. I just think I am bad with bookwork. I need to do better on the final obviously. That's what we did the entire class so that's it for me.

Rome Test

So today in western civ we had a test and i dont think it went very well. I thought I knew more than I did and i feel that I lot of people probably felt the same way. It was a difficult test and I think many people felt that way. I don't think we had enough time to prepare for it since we had 2 days to go over a powerpoint. Not much of it was from the book. This test will hurt my grade and it stinks.

Test Tommorow

So today in western civ we went over the powerpoint again and we have a test tommorow. I know a decent bit about Rome so I can get a good score but I'm not 100% on it so thats not great. I studied some tonight to help me out a little bit. Some things on the powerpoint were the dictators of Rome and when they ruled which confuses me just like they always do. So, wish me luck. I'm going to try to ace this tommorow.

Review of Rome

So today was our first full day of reviewing in a while since Mr. Schick has been out for so long. So, we get into class and there are very few kids there just like all my classes. I was thinking there was something going on but maybe people were sick or just skipping school. So we went over Chi Cagos guide to Ancient Rome and got through quite a bit of slides on there. Probably about 20. It was a very productive class to prepare for the test on Tuesday.

Review/Day 8 of Rome

So today in Western Civ we started class with a review and Mr. Schick was back. Then we did our final day of Rome.It was just a worksheet so there isnt much to put in this blog. Mr Schick and Belle argued about the Sandy Hook Conspiracy which is stupid because it obviously happened. I dont know why that was even an argument. But the worksheet was on the fall of the roman empire and Pompeii. Thats about all I have. We won our baseball game and Mr Grzannas car window got smashed. At least I think it was his.

Rome Day 7

Rome kinda fell out of nowhere because they just lost one battle and their entire empire fell down from there. I dont think that will happen to the USA because we dont have as many battles and try to own huge empires in this day and age. But in this hypothetical scenario if the US would get taken over like Ancient Rome did then its always possible. One war can demolish a place with tons of power just like what happened to Rome. The only reasons in my opinion that the US would fall is if some government problem and not like Rome.

Day 6 of Rome

inflation- prices in things drop, basically a drop in stocks in todays world
mercenary- foreign soldiers recruited by the government to fight for money
Diocletian- Leader of an army
Constantinople- New Roman Capital
Attila- powerful chieftain

Inflation, Agriculture, bad military

He split the empire in half for discipline and eventually doubled the size of the empire until it collapsed

The Huns were invading them

Day 4 of Rome

Today is Day 4 of Rome which means we are halfway done so here are my notes for this class.
We are supposed to compare the textbook to the rap that Mr Schick did. His rap is awesome. The difference is that Mr Schick's rap talks about more of the kings. Meanwhile the powerpoint also talked about locations of the Roman Empire and where things were so basically the geography of it. Also in the powerpoint it describes the different types of government that they had compared to Greece but the rap doesnt talk about that.

Day 3 of rome

So today I don't know how I'm going to make this 150 words because Mr. Powell was our sub and he just gave us an off mod so we really did nothing.

Normal Class again

So today in class it started off very strange. Mr Schick showed us a picture of him from 30 years ago and it looked like Bob Ross to be honest. Then he started to rap about Rome and that was pretty funny. Then we learned about Rome and a few things are that are cool like how romulus won a battle and thats why it is called Rome. Rome seems like an exciting place because it is more recent than greece and it is such a beautiful place now and t would be nice to know how it got that way.

Surgery

We got our tests back and I don't want to talk about mine so lets move on from that but the big news today was that Mr. Schick is getting surgery on Thursday on an umbilical hermia which is really strange and thats the thing on your bellybutton so thats very strange. Sorry, Mr. Schick. Also, he'll miss two weeks which means we will have a lot of subs and bookwork and I don't do so well with bookwork so this won't be great for me.

Saturday, April 13, 2019

Test Day

So today was not very good. I was not prepared for the test at all. I was not getting a lot of the questions right and didn't even know one of the essay questions. I feel so bad and I'm struggling to keep good grades in this class this semester. But life goes on and I'm glad it's finally spring break. We're on the last stretch of the year with less than 30 days left of school. I'm excited for what we are going to do at the end of the year. Next time we have class I'm not sure what we are doing but thats a long time away.

Review and Movie

Today in Western Civ we reviewed the homework from last night and I did not have my paper because it was at my house so I couldn't really talk about the paper even though I did do it. Then we watched a movie about prisoners in a cave and they were looking at shadows and telling what they saw. Then when they were released into the outside world, they didn't know what was going on ad how shadows were real and not real. It was very strange because you can't really imagine doing something like that because we already know what things are. But then Mr. Schick compared it to TV. This makes sense to me because my dog barks at the TV and I think she believes it is real things so maybe thats what the prisoners are thinking while they are in there.

Western Civ study guide

Today in western civ we were studying for the test on friday on sections 3, 4, and 5. The test on Friday is important because I got a C last quarter and I can not do that again. So today in class, I read over the sections again just to remember what happened. Then Mr. Schick handed out a study guide so I quickly did that with about 15 minutes left of class so I listened to music and relaxed. It was a pretty good class today. I have no idea what we will be doing Wednesday and Thursday before the test though.

5. Antigonus had Macedonia, Ptolemy had Egypt, and Seleucus had Persian empire.

Notes from textbook

Today in Western Civ we took textbook notes on the Democracy in Ancient Greece so it was basically a free period to do whatever. I turned on music, read the pages and now am doing my blog.
Some of the biggest points in the textbook pages were:
Pericles led Athens and wanted stronger democracies
Direct Democracy- Gov where citizens rule directly
Athens won Delian League
Classical art- dealing wth beauty and not realism
tragedy- serious drama
comedy- funny
Pelopenessian War- War between Athens and Sparta in the sea where there was a truce.
philosopher- Great thinkers that were determined to seek the truth
Socrates- A greek philosopher who said that the unexamined life was not worth living,Plato- A student of Socrates Aristotle- A student of Plato

We presented

So today in western civ we got to present our project on Ancient Greece. All went well, we knew what to say. The video went well and some people laughed at it so that was the goal. Im glad we finally got to present beause to be honest I hate speaking in front of people. It scares me to do that. I don't know why because I talk in class all the time but just standing up there scares me a lot. Anyway, patricks group also went as well as Anthonys group so it was all good today.

Saturday, March 30, 2019

Presentations

So my group did not get to present today because I forgot to bring in the spears. So my fault on that one but we did get to see two other groups present. The 1st group was Katie and Grace and they talked about Greek food and handed out these greek pancakes and olives grapes and cucumbers. Tasted pretty good. Then we got to see Colin and Tebo who talked about the battle of Thermopylae. Tebo made this model that showed the battle and it was pretty cool and looked really nice.

Project Prep day #2

Today in western Civ we had a final day to prepare for our projects and presenting them. We recorded our final scene in the hallway where Sean gets into the Spartan Army. Ir should be a good project and I am ready to present it for a 200 point grade which is a big grade. That's equal to 2 tests. I'm really hoping for a good grade on this because our movie is definnetly not Pixar quality. I ended up with a C in the class because I didn't do well on the tests. I've never gotten a C before so this is scary. I'ts a lot more difficult than what my middle school was.

Project prep Day #1

Today in western civ we had one day to prep for our project. Me and Trent and Sean had a big argument at the beginning of the class over how we should end our movie. Sean had a stupid idea that we are going to do because Trent can't do CGI. I wish we couldve done a battle though but there really is no way to with 3 people. So the whole class we prepared for the presentation which is going on Thursday I guess. Big grade to start the fourth quarter. Kind of excited but at the same time our video is average so I'm hoping we do well. Its good except we had no props at all.

Saturday, March 23, 2019

Test Day

Today in western Civ we had a test. I know that I got a couple questions wrong but I don't think I did too bad. There were a few questions like the rivers that I mixed up and I forgot how the geography of Greece affected their lifestyle. I think I got  high B which would bring my grade up so that's good. I just wish I studied a little bit more so I could know these types of things. I am working on the project this weekend After the test we went down to the library so we could do something.

Test Tommorow

Tommorow we have a test in western civ on everything we've learned about Greece. We went over everything we've learned to get ready. Here are some notes I took:

Philosopherlapalooza- Socrates looked to science and logic. Socratic method fostered critical thinking.
The unexamined life is not worth living.
Socrates was charged with crimes
Described himself as a stinging gadfly and Athens a lazy horse
Asked for free dinners. Didn’t deny what they said
Death by poison hemlock
Aristotle was a student of Plato
Fostered ideas of Athens as intellectual destination
The Lyceum had all knowledge around the world like the internet
Aristotle wrote extensively on everything

Powerpoint

Today in western civ we had a pretty normal day. We looked at a powerpoint about Ancient Greece to get ready for our test that is coming up very soon. Not sure on the exact day. We learned on some of the battles in Greece. for example the battle of Thermopale was 300 greeks versus tons of persians and the greeks won which allowed greece to be a dynasty for a long time. They used many strategies in battle for example, they were in a formation where they bundled together and they all stuck their spears out at the opponents so there would be no close combat and the opponents would have to shoot arrows from far away.

Working on project

Today I got together with Trent and Sean and we worked on the project and planned it out. We want to come to my house this weekend to film the video we are going to create but I don't know how it is going to turn out. I think and hope that it will turn out very well but we'll see. That's about all we did so I don't know what else to tell you. I finally got my grade up to a B by doing all of my blogs. I still need to get it higher though.

Saturday, March 16, 2019

Project on greece

Today in western civ we got assigned a project on Ancient Greece so I went into a group with Trent and Sean. I hope it’s going to work out because we have some really good ideas for the project. We want to do a video on the life of a Spartan Soldier and act it out so I’m going to try to do that and see how it goes. This should be fun and hopefully get off to a good start in the 4th quarter. I can’t beleive it’s almost the 4th quarter already. This year has honestly flown by for me.

Wednesday, March 13, 2019

Sub today

Today in western civ, we had a substitute teacher named mrs magner. I don't know who she was but she made us spit out our gum which kinda stank. Then we watched a 55 minute video. Personally I don't really like watching long videos but its alright because it was last mod and i had a baseball game to look forward to. Anyway the video was about the birth of democracy. I'm still confused on all the different kings. They all are similar so I'm going to have to remember that.

Tuesday, March 12, 2019

Notes on Greece

Today in western Civ we talked about aristocarts and how they had synopsums which were these parties for white land owning males that looked pretty fun because there was music and tightrope walkers. Then there were all these different kings which honestly kinda got confusing on who was ruling at which time. Then, class ended so we played tic-tac-toe and patrick did Big Yoshi and I guessed it so im just amazing at tic tac toe.

Monday, March 11, 2019

Average Class

So today in western Civ we were talking about Greece and how it works as a city state and its laws and then Mr. Schick started singing a song that he sings to his dog. It was a pretty good song called Stanley Pupparoo. Legendary, gotta love Mr. Schick. But on to the stuff the we actually learned.
We talked about how Draco was mostly evil due to some things he did in Ancient Greece. We also talked about how in Greece they believed in Gods but didn't really . believe in them. They were just good ways of telling stories on how things came to be in nature. I like Mesopotamia most so far. Also I'm so close to getting my grade up to a B in that class. I need a B to get a good GPA so I'm doing my best.

Friday, March 8, 2019

Ugh....

Today in Western Civ we were going to have a normal class and we were learning about Greece but then belle and olivia were talking and we had to stop class so that we could take notes in a book. I think it was a bit of an overreaction but its alright. he said to talk about how we hate this class but its not a horrible class. I just wish that we would do more group work or things that we can interract with something. That's just the type of learner I am. Its still not my least favorite class though. Math class is so slow and boring. Now I am doing my blog and mr. schick just walked out of the room. So time to take notes on Greece. If I had to improve this class in any way it would be by making it so we could intteract more like I said so we could learn more visually and I forget the word for the other way to learn but I like that way

Wednesday, March 6, 2019

Greece Day 2

Today we learned about Greece again. We are learning a lot of stuff about old time empires or civilizations. It's going to be difficult to remember which things belong to which civilization because in my opinion they are all very similar. Some of the main points today were that Pelopennesus had a big wall around it so no one coud enter. The people there at a lot of grapes. Not sure why but they did. Finally they had Gods to show how things formed on the earth in their own mindset.

Tuesday, March 5, 2019

1st day of Greece

Today we had our first day about Greece. We started by Mr. Schick making a joke about the musical Grease and I didn't get it at all but oh well. Then we talked about how every civilization back then was on water. Greece is on 3 seas, the Aegeon Sea, the Ionian Sea, and the Crete Sea. Yup. Then we looked at how mountainous Greece was and it had so many mountains, the air there mustve been horrible. Then we finished taking notes on Greece from yesterday. Also I got a 59/75 on my quiz which brings me to a 78 so that's not good.

Monday, March 4, 2019

Test on Egypt

Today in western Civ we had a test on Egypt. It was alright, I didn't know a few things that I should've gotten if I knew that we had a test which I didn't. I wish i knew more so that i could get my grade up but I really didn't know. I also forgot how to spell cattaracs, so that may be a problem. I think I got a B, that's what I'm hoping for right now. I don't remember being told that there was a test. Next we took notes on greece for the rest of class which was about 20 minutes so I didn't get very far. I'm also surprised that we didn't have off school. It was a big surprise to me. I woke up at 7 and checked the website and 2-hour delay. Ugh.

Thursday, February 28, 2019

End of the day western civ class

So today in western civ we talked about egypt. They do a lot of things in egypt like built pyramids which were the largest structure in the world for a long time. They also believe in an after life called ka which means kings can still rule after they die. The sun god is ra and the nile god is hila. Egypt was a big empire with many pharoahs. Then we had some free time so I started my blog. Good thing were getting off tommorow because I am so tired, I deserve a day off. If we don't have ff I am going to be so out of it.

Questions on Egypt

1.
Delta- Egypt farmlands got fertile so
Narmer- Unified Egypt under one ruler.
Pharaoh- They were worshiped as gods and ruled Egypt with supreme power.
Theocracy- The pharaohs claimed to rule with power given to them from the gods.
Pyramid- These are some of the oldest structures in existence and where pharaohs would live their afterlife.
Mummification- The dead pharaohs would be mummified so their bodies did not rot.
Hieroglyphic- The Egyptian form of writing.
Papyrus- What Egyptians would write on like paper.

2. Egypt benefitted from deserts because when the Nile flooded, the water would turn the soil into silt which was good for farming.

3. The gods were so big and powerful that they could be viewed as god-kings.

4. The bodies were mummified to prevent them from decaying and so the bodies could be preserved.

Note taking

Today in Western Civ we turned in the homework from last night which was a lot of opinions on Hammurabis code and how you feel about it. Then we finished up the blue sheet from yesterday and theres so many harsh things on there. You kill someone if they rob a house. If a slave tells his master that he is not his master then he gets his ear cut off. If you hit your father then you get your hand cut off. It's just so harsh what happens with 5 words that you say. Finally we took notes on Egypt instead of Mesopotamia because we're done with mesopotamia. In fact we have a test on Mesopotamia coming soon. YES!!! i need to get my grade up because i have a 76 right now. So lets hope I do well on this next test.

Thursday, February 21, 2019

Making Punishments

Today in western civ we got a worksheet on making punishments for things in hammurabis code. For example we had to decide what should happen to someone who robs a house. I said they should get their posessions taken but they would be put to death. That shows how harsh Hammurabis code was; no one could do anything bad without getting some part of their body chopped off or death. i think in some cases it's unfair but in others like an eye for an eye is fair. You shouldn't poke someones eye out anyway no matter how mad you are.

Thursday, February 14, 2019

Regular Day

So today is Valentines Day and in Western Civ we talked about how Valentines Day got its name from Saint Valentine and he never said why he was a saint so im still curious on that. Then we talked about Mesopotamia which was an empire and had very fertile soil. Finally at the end of class we looked at Hammurabis Code and alot of the laws are unfair to women and the laws favor men more. Also the laws re very harsh because they make people get the death penalty for very minor thngs.

Wednesday, February 13, 2019

Got Our tests back

Today in Western Civ we got our tests back and I got 78. It's kind of dissapointing because everyone else besides a few people got the bell so I'm surprised I didn't do better. I didn't know the animals that well or the suff about the sako so i lost points there. We talked about differnt eras like the neolithic era and the paleolithic era and how they lived in those times. I don't kno how else to fill the 150 words so I'm just going to talk about how the essay on the test was hard and I really didn't know about any of the options and got the food surplus one completely wrong.

Thursday, February 7, 2019

Textbook Work

Today in Western Civ we did textbook work for the 1st time. It was on river valley civilizations and in paticular, Mesopotamia. Mesopotamia is a place in the fertile crescent which is the best place for farming. Also, Hammurabi's Code was in the pages we read. Hammurabis code was very strict and I think it was unfair. If you cant pay back the money for the pig then you die instead of jail. I don't believe in the death penalty at all because I think everyone deserves a second chance. I got a lot done today, I put my earbuds in and worked away with no distractions. I'm just hoping for a good grade on the test to get my grade up.

Tuesday, February 5, 2019

Test Day!!!!

Today in Western Civ, I got into class and Mr. Schick was playing some classic rock music which means I think I should play some good old rap music when I get into class. Just saying. Then we got ready for the test. I didn't think I was ready for the test at all but then once I started it wasn't terrible. I did forget 3 out of the 14 animals and I struggled on the essay. I was not prepared for an essay at all. I did the second essay option about food surplus. I talked about how food is an important factor to a good, healthy, settlement. I think I'll get about a 85-90 on the test. Just because of the animals and essay portion because the multiple choice portion was pretty easy.

Guns Germs and Steel... again

Today in western civ, we actually finished Guns Germs and Steel. It took about 4 class periods. I was really tired in class today because of the Super Bowl last night but I still got some notes from todays portion of the video. There are 14 total mammals over 100 pounds to be domesticated. Most of them come from Middle East, Northern Africa and Europe. Actually the only one that doesn't is the llama which comes from South America. We have a test tommorow which is just awesome. Is it on the movie? I'm not sure what else it would be on. I like Human Geo better so far because we could get into discussion and so far with Western Civ we've just watched a movie and we're doing textbook stuff later.

Thursday, January 24, 2019

Guns Germs and Steel

Today in Western Civ we continued watching Guns Germs and Steel. Today we watched a lot about how they domesticate animals. It is very difficult to domesticate land mammals that eat plants and weigh 100+ pounds. Out of 148 of those animals only 14 of them have been able to be domesticated. Also many of the New guineans made their own sako which is food. They actually sell sako on amazon so if everyone in the class pitches in 2 dollars we can get 9 bags of sako. I think it would be fun to try some so we can expierience the new guniean culture.

Video

Today in Western Civ class we watched a video called Guns Germs and Roses. It was about these people that moved to Africa to make a living and they're very poor so they have trouble surviving and are constantly working.I had trouble watching the video because I don't bring headphones to school so I had to turn on closed captioning to understand what was going on but it was still difficult. Also we moved seats today. I don't really like my new seat because before I liked Sean and he was behind me and now Sydneys cool but I dont really know her that well. Also, I dont like the back that much. Just my personal prefrence.

Exam Essays

Today in Human Geo class we got our essays for the exams back. I got an 81 because I did not accurately describe the situations in the 3 nations that I chose to do. I really don'y know many situations around the world so it was difficult for me. On my other exam I did not say what each stage meant. If I did that I would've got around a 85-86. My total exam grade was an 86 which means that I need a 91+ average for the 2 quarters to keep an A. That would mean I need a 96 this quarter which is not going to happen since I have a 91 right now. Right now in class we are doing silent work and I'm working on my blog while Mr. Schick grades the last 2 essays.

Reviewing Religions

Today we got into human geo class and started talking about the paragraphs that we wrote last night. I feel like mine was too short but I did answer a lot of the questions. After that we talked about Buddhism. They have all these zen quotes which are very strange to me. They're all very calming quotes that show great meaning to them. Mr Schick also told a funny joke. He said what did the buddhist say to the hot dog vendor? Make me one with everything. That was a good one. Also, we have a test on friday and if I to horrible I get a B but if not then ill keep my A. Finally I got an 86 on my exam which I wish I did better but it's alright.

Paragraph on religions

Christianity- It is the biggest religion in the world having 2.2 billion followers. Christians follow the Bible as their holy book. The leader of a christian community is called the pope or clergy. Christians believe that Christ came down to Earth to save them from sins and they will go to heaven because Jesus died on the cross.
Islamic- It is the 2nd biggest religion in the world with 1.6 billion followers. These people are called Muslims. They are found mainly in the Middle East and Asia. They follow the Quran as their holy book. They believe that Allah or God is the leader of the Earth.
Hinduism- It is the 3rd largest religion in the world with 1.1 billion followers. Hindus are found mainly in Asia. A big thing that hindus believe in is reincarnation. This means that when you die you will become something else. Hindus don't believe in a leader but they do have many of their own beliefs.
Buddhism-  It is the 4th largest religion in the world but no one knows the amount of Buddhists there actually are. They are mainly found in Asia. The believe in the four truths and the eightfold path as a way of living. They also worship a statue of Buddha.
Judaism- It is around the 10th biggest religion in the world. Their beliefs are very similar to those of a Christian. They believe that Jesus came down to save them from sins and that they will go to heaven. The read a holy book called the Torah. They are mainly found in the US and Isreal. There are about 16 million jews in the world.

Review and Test Grades

Today in class we went over a lot of things we need to know for the test next week. We learned that Christianity and Islamic dominate most countries. There are some exceptions though. For example Chinas main religion is Hindu and Israels main religion is Judaism. The biggest part of the day was getting the multiple choice portion of our exams back. I got an 88 on that portion which I'm not mad about. that was about the class average so that's fine. I wish I got an A though. I honestly thought I did better so I want to see which ones I got wrong. The esssays were the hardest part for me though so I'm definetly scared for that to come.

Reviewing Blogs

Today in Human Geo class we reviewed the blogs that we had last night about Islamic cultures and their ways of living. Right now we are talking about how the Sacraments are not coming up in religion class and how religion classes are getting much less strict with what they are teaching kids. When Mr. Schick was young they pounded with info when but now they don't do that. Now we are talking about Mecca where Muslims go because it is the holy city. A long time ago Muslims actually had to walk to Mecca. Also Mr. Schick cuddled a 4 pound baby last night which is super small and scary. Just thought I should include that.

Rigveda-  It is the oldest text in the Veda and has 1,028 hymns. It also contains many questions about the universe and gods,

Yajurveda- It contains 1,875 verses. The verses are about things to do during worship.
Sama-veda- It has 1,549 verses. It has songs and phrases in symbolic and numerical form. Melodies in the Sama-Veda are likely the world's oldest surviving melodies.

Sporcle Quiz

We got into class and Mr. Schick had a Sporcle quiz up. It was different quotes from either the Quran or the Bible. We had to get 18/20 or higher to move on in class. It must have took at least 15 attempts for us to move on. It was very difficult to tell the difference. At the end we figured out that the bible is more harsh especially in the old testament before the birth of Jesus. It was shocking to figure out how much we couldn't tell the difference and how similar they are to each other. After that we moved on to talk about Judaism. I was surprised to find it as the 9th most popular religion. I thought it was 3rd or 4th.

Religion Unit

Today in human geo we started a new unit on religion. This is the last unit on Human Geo before we move to Western Civilization. We started it off by talking about how Mr. Schick's new dog was too aggressive so that was pretty sad. Then we got into Christianity. Christianity is celebrated by 2.2 billion people around the world mainly in Europe, the Americas, and southern Africa.  The people the celebrate this religion refer to themselves as Christians. There are many denominations such as Catholic, Protestant, and Lutheran. Christians read the Bible and their main belief is that Jesus is the Son of God and God himself. The clergy of Christians is the Pope.
